Periodontal diseases are infections in the structures around the teeth, but not in the actual teeth themselves. These structures include the: gums, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone.
It can progress from gingivitis, which is the first stage of periodontal disease and only affects the gums. Periodontal diseases are caused most often by a combination of bacteria and dental plaque. Symptoms may include: swollen & bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession & loose teeth.
Deep Scaling and Root Planing Is a deep cleaning below the gum line used to treat gum disease. Scaling is removing all the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) above and below the gumline, making sure to clean all the way down to the bottom of the pocket while root planing, smoothing out your teeth roots to help your gums reattach to your teeth.
